Kenneth graduated from the University of Malta in 2006 after having successfully read an Honours Degree in Accounting. Today Kenneth is a Certified Public Accountant with a Certificate to Practice Auditing. He furthered his studies by reading for a post-graduate diploma in Taxation offered by the Malta Institute of Taxation graduating with Distinction. Today, he is a Fellow of the Malta Institute of Accountants and a Fellow of the Malta Institute of Taxation.
After graduating he gained valuable experience with a Big 4 audit firm as an Audit Manager working on a diversified portfolio of clients, both locally and internationally in the firm’s Dublin Financial Services office (Ireland). Whilst working in Dublin he was heavily involved in the audit of Pension Funds. In the Malta office he serviced a vast variety of clients, both operating in the local scene as well as international clients with tax advice being at the forefront of value added services.
Eventually he furthered his knowledge by working in the local industry as a Financial Controller of a major local importer of steel and glass for the construction industry. This has helped him better understand the processes of how an actual accounts department works and managing all the intricacies of cash flow, preparing budgets and most importantly adhering to those budgets.
Today, he is the founding Partner of SWK Certified Public Accountants & Auditors, which is a boutique audit firm offering services in Audit, Tax, Advisory and Back-office support.
In line with his duties, he is responsible for leading the firm’s audit department dealing with Audits of local and international companies. He also provides direct taxation advice and acts as a financial consultant to a number of major players in the Maltese business environment.

After having obtained his Management Honours degree from the University of Malta in 2007, Joseph joined a Big 4 audit firm as an Audit Junior. During such employment he furthered his studies and in 2011 he also managed to obtain his ACCA certification.
During his time at the Big 4 Audit firm Joseph was in-charge of the statutory audits
After having obtained his Management Honours degree from the University of Malta in 2007, Joseph joined a Big 4 audit firm as an Audit Junior. During such employment he furthered his studies and in 2011 he also managed to obtain his ACCA certification.
During his time at the Big 4 Audit firm Joseph was in-charge of the statutory audits of various companies both local and foreign, varying from manufacturing concerns, companies listed on the Malta Stock Exchange and holding companies.
As a Certified Public Accountant and MIA member he joined Malta’s largest travel company also having various business interests in foreign countries such as Turkey, Russia, Tunisia and Jordan as Group Finance Manager in 2011. The Group had an average of Eur25m in annual sales and was also the top selling company for cruises in South East Europe, Middle East and Africa regions. During the six years at such Group, Joseph prepared monthly management accounts, annual reports in accordance with IFRS and relevant legislations, budgets and forecasts, together with other duties tied to the role of Group Finance Manager.
In August 2017 he joined SWK Group and in 2018 he was promoted as an Audit Partner. He is responsible for overseeing audit planning, field work, and audit reporting of a portfolio of diversified local and foreign clients and also offers advisory services such as those related to issuance of specific reports (Section 73 Expert Reports & Share Transfers) and other ad-hoc requests from clients. Joseph is also the MLRO of the firm.
Today Joseph is an Associate member of the Malta Institute of Accountants, a Fellow Member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and a Certified Public Accountant with a Certificate to Practice Auditing.

Tax Refund System
Companies registered in Malta are deemed to be domiciled and resident in Malta, hence their worldwide profits are taxed in Malta.
However, the amendments to the Maltese fiscal laws in 2007 offer a revamped system of corporate tax refunds
The extent of the refund depends on the nature and source of profits. The law provides for 4 types of refunds depending on the nature of the profits:
- 6/7ths refund - refund of 30% of 35% tax producing a tax liability of 5% typically due on trading profits
- 5/7ths refunds (refund of 25%) due in respect of passive interest & royalties
- 2/3rds refund due where the company has claimed double taxation relief
- 100% refund due where the profits derive from a Participating Holding (profits received from equity shares held by a Maltese company in a foreign company).
